How Do I Know if my Central Heating is in Need of Repair

Have you ever woken abruptly in the night to the sound of whistling coming from your boiler? Perhaps you’ve noticed cold patches developing on your radiators, or maybe the pressure gauge seems to run consistently low?

These are just some of the many issues that can plague modern boiler units, creating a central heating system that can become unfit for purpose and even unsafe over time.

Below, we’ve listed some of the other tell-tale signs that your central heating system is in need of repair, whilst asking how you should handle these problems.

Are Your Condensate Pipes Frozen?

If your boiler issues coincides with a dramatic drop in temperature, this may be the result of having frozen condensate pipes.

This is a common issue in the modern age, as all new boilers are condensing and utilise condensate pipes to drain the water produced by waste gas.

If the water suddenly freezes in these pipes, this will create a significant blockage that must be tackled by an expert hand. In some instances the pipe can even break if the issue isn’t resolved, and an excellent way to prevent this in the future is to insulate your pipework with lagging.

Do you Have Intermittent Heat and Hot Water?

Occasionally, you may also notice that your boiler is only producing intermittent or no heat and hot water.

This can be caused by various factors, from broken diaphragms and airlocks to faulty motorised valves, damaged thermostats and low water levels.

We’d recommend starting by checking the boiler and thermostat, as this may present glaringly obvious repairs that can be easily carried out. However, if the issue isn’t apparent then you’ll need to call out a heating engineer to attend your home.

Is the Boiler Making Gurgling, Banging or Whistling Noises?

Not only can these noises be disruptive, but they may also be indicative of significant issues within the central heating system.

Some noises can be particularly concerning, with gurgling, banging and whistling sounds triggered by everything from low water pressure, a faulty pump and in some instances a build-up of sludge and limescale in the system.

Regardless, we’d recommend calling out an engineer to attend to these noises and investing in an expert diagnosis before taking the next step.
